Audi Quattro 40 years
Forty years ago, Audi created a sensation at the Geneva Car Show with the performance of the Quattro. It was unseen that a powerful and sporty coupé (200 hp/147 kW) with four-wheel drive was proposed; this drive concept was reserved for trucks and 4x4s up to that point.
The Audi engineers got their inspiration during the test drives of the VW Iltis off-road vehicle developed by Audi for the German Army in the winter of 1976/77. The excellent driving characteristics on snow and ice gave the engineers the idea to mount the same type of integral drive system on an Audi 80. The rally debut of the Audi Quattro followed a year later and turned the rally world upside down. Gradually, the Quattro drive was also introduced on Audi’s range of passenger cars and the rest is history.
Some of the Audi Quattro history highlights can be admired at Autoworld from 30 April to 24 May.
